Enable TRIM command:

Avoid filling the drive completely:

Keeping some free space on a SSD allows it to manage data more effectively. A nearly full drive can slow down performance and reduce efficiency. Leaving at least 10-20% of storage free helps the SSD work properly over time.

Update firmware regularly:

Manufacturers release firmware updates to improve SSD performance and fix issues. Checking for updates on the manufacturer’s website and installing them ensures the drive runs at its best. Updating firmware is a simple process that usually entails a restart.

Reduce unnecessary writes:

SSDs have a limited number of write cycles, meaning excessive writing may shorten their lifespan. Avoiding unnecessary file transfers, disabling unnecessary logging, and reducing background tasks that frequently write data helps maintain the drive.

Avoid defragmentation:

Defragmenting a SSD is unnecessary and may cause extra wear. Unlike traditional hard drives, SSDs access data instantly, so fragmentation does not affect performance. Most modern operating systems disable automatic defragmentation for SSDs, but it is good to check the settings to ensure it is off.

Use power management settings:

Adjusting power settings to balance performance and efficiency helps prevent unnecessary wear. Some power-saving features in laptops may reduce the lifespan of a SSD by frequently turning it off and on. Setting the power options to a balanced mode can prevent this issue.

Monitor drive health:

Checking the SSD’s health status using software tools provided by manufacturers or third-party applications gives updates on performance and lifespan. Regular monitoring helps detect issues early and allows for data backup before problems occur.
